Battersea has always been a destination of choice for rescue centres with a desire to learn best practice in animal rescue and rehoming. Adele graduated with a BSc Animal Science (Behaviour & Welfare) and has also gained a PG Certificate in International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law. She has worked at Battersea for 7 years, initially responsible for the daily husbandry and carrying out the behavioural assessment process. She has worked as a part of the Canine Behaviour and Training team, working with staff and volunteers as well as implementing and assisting with behaviour plans for our dogs. More recently Adele has joined the Team Leaders and is responsible for the day to day running of our kennels, managing and providing support to our kennel staff. She is passionate about responsible pet ownership, running external puppy training classes and private behaviour consultation.
Irrespective of breed, temperament, age or health we will open our gates to those animals in need of care and shelter, and we will do all we can to either reunite them with their owners or find them loving new homes. All Community Rehoming Volunteers will receive ongoing support and behavioural training throughout their time looking after Battersea dogs and cats. Battersea will also provide everything needed to look after one of its animals, including food, equipment and any necessary veterinary treatment. We want to make the Academy accessible to every rescue and rehoming centre, no matter their size or location. If you are a not for profit animal rescue organisation working with dogs and/or cats you may be eligible to apply for a bursary towards the cost of attending one of our programmes.

Residents of Basingstoke can now volunteer to help dogs and cats as the leading charity prepares to launch its third Community scheme. James joins the charity’s cattery and will help care for some of the home’s 190 cats. More than 3 million dogs and cats have been rehomed by Battersea since it opened in 1860 and in 2012 it cared for 5,880 dogs and 2,760 cats.
Roles vary from providing hands-on care at the centres, in homes, office support, community event work and looking after the gardens. The charity has been finding homes for animals in need since 1860, but this is the first time a permanent centre has been set up in Hampshire. As part of Battersea’s Community launch in Basingstoke, the charity will be holding a Community Roadshow, visiting popular Basingstoke landmarks. Potential volunteers need to live in the TN23 to 30 postcodes, not have children or pets of their own and have access to a vehicle to take the animal to and from a vets' surgery. The volunteers care for the animals in their own homes, and often help with any health issues they have before they are rehomed. We recognise that funding can be a significant barrier to change for many organisations.

The film below highlights some of the most pressing problems facing those individuals and organisations working tirelessly to improve the lives of unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats, both in this country and around the world. If you live in the Ashford area but don’t fit the criteria needed to become a Community Rehoming Volunteer, Battersea is also looking for dog and cat fanatics to donate their time at local events, such as Kent County Show. Applicants will also need access to a car and preferably live in a household without other animals or young children. Volunteers will also receive ongoing support, behavioural training and Battersea will provide everything needed to look after the animal, such as food and veterinary treatments.

Could you temporarily care for a Battersea dog or cat in Ashford , Guildford or Basingstoke? Shaun Opperman is the Veterinary Director at Battersea, managing a team of 8 vets and 35 veterinary nurses across all three sites. A Bristol graduate, he joined Battersea in 1991 after five years working in small animal practice in the UK and Australia. He has a keen interest in shelter medicine, soft tissue surgery, canine respiratory disease and shelter ethics.

After beginning her career as a high school Biology teacher, she moved into the animal charity sector where she spent 12 years working for World Animal Protection. Initially as Head of Education, she led a global team delivering animal welfare education training programmes for teachers and for veterinary lecturers. She then spearheaded the design and implementation of a new department that focused on fostering sustainable behaviour change in different audiences. Ruth shares her home with her husband and two children and is patiently waiting for the day the kids are old enough to enjoy SCUBA diving and mountain biking as much as she does.
From the moment we welcomed our first stray dog in 1860 we have been placing our animals at the centre of everything we do. More than three million animals later, we're still working hard to achieve our vision that every dog and cat should live in a home where they are treated with love, care and respect. Battersea is now working in Basingstoke to rehome more rescue dogs and cats and put smiles on more faces. He serves as the Honorary Secretary of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes and is a Trustee of the Petplan Charitable Trust and the Southern Thailand Elephant Foundation. Previously he held welfare, regulatory and business development roles in various not-for-profit and commercial organisations. We know that we can achieve more together than we can alone, so we’ve created the Battersea Academy, a centre for professional development that trains animal welfare practitioners from across the UK and around the world. The charity experienced an increase in volunteering enquiries since the pandemic, due to many people on furlough or working from home with time to give.
She then switched her focus to smaller felines and worked in feline welfare for The Mayhew and Wood Green, before joining Battersea. Paul became Executive Head of the Battersea Academy in July 2018, having joined Battersea as Interim Director of Fundraising in October 2017. Beginning his career in retail, Paul has worked in the charity sector for almost 30 years holding senior positions at RNIB, British Red Cross, AMREF and the Institute of Fundraising . As Director of Learning at the IoF Paul launched the IoF Academy; it is now the UK’s leading provider of fundraising training and education.
She now works with our kennel staff to help the dogs who need behavioural support and to provide training advice. She loves working in rescue and finds it so rewarding to see the dogs that she's helped go on to a new, happy life. Ali has worked at Battersea for over a quarter of a century as Head of Canine Behaviour and Training. During her time here, Ali has helped thousands of the country's most challenging and vulnerable dogs, not just within Battersea but through work with other rescues and dog lovers nationwide.
In 2016 Becky joined Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and holds the title of Rehoming and Welfare Manager (Dog Rehoming & Customer Services), where she is responsible for the dog rehoming and customer service function of the London site. Rob joined Battersea in 2014 and has been in his current role as a Canine Behaviourist and Training Advisor since 2017. His role involves supporting animals as they go through their Battersea journey, providing the most current, science-based training, making their stay in rescue as relaxed as possible. Rob provides continued training, support, advice and guidance to staff and volunteers within the organisation, while also working closely with pet owners and external organisations.
